Before You Begin
Before installing Office, make sure you have:
Your 25-character Microsoft Office Home & Business 2021 product key
A Microsoft account (or create one during activation)
A stable internet connection
Administrator access to your Mac
Recommended: If another version of Microsoft Office is already installed, remove it first to avoid installation or activation conflicts.
Step 1 – Remove Previous Versions of Microsoft Office (Recommended)
To help prevent installation or activation issues, uninstall any existing Microsoft Office applications before installing Office 2021.
Remove Office
Open Finder.
Select Applications.
Locate all Microsoft Office applications:
Word
Excel
PowerPoint
Outlook
OneNote
OneDrive (optional)
Drag each application to the Trash.
Empty the Trash.
Note: Removing Office applications does not delete your personal Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files.
We also recommend removing any older Microsoft Office licenses stored in your Mac's Keychain Access.
Step 2 – Redeem Your Product Key
Before Office can be downloaded, your license must first be linked to your Microsoft account.
Open your web browser.
Go to:
Click Get Started.
Sign in with your Microsoft account.
If you don't have one, select Create one and follow the prompts.
Enter your 25-character product key.
Example:
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Click Next.
Select your Country/Region and Language.
Click Next or Confirm.
Review your information and click Confirm.
Important: Your product key can only be redeemed once. After redemption, the license is permanently linked to the Microsoft account used during activation.
Step 3 – Download Microsoft Office
Once your product key has been redeemed:
On the confirmation page, click Download Office.
Your browser will begin downloading the Office installer (.pkg).
If prompted where to save the file, choose Downloads.
Step 4 – Install Microsoft Office
Open the Downloads folder.
Double-click the downloaded Microsoft Office Installer.pkg.
Click Continue.
Accept the Microsoft Software License Agreement.
Click Install.
Enter your Mac administrator password if prompted.
Wait for the installation to finish.
Click Close.
Step 5 – Open an Office Application
Open Finder.
Select Applications.
Launch Microsoft Word (or any Office application).
The first launch may take a few moments.
Step 6 – Sign In
When prompted:
Click Sign In.
Sign in using the same Microsoft account used to redeem your product key.
Office should automatically detect your license.
Step 7 – Verify Activation
To confirm Office is activated:
Open Word.
Select Word from the menu bar.
Choose About Word or:
Word → Preferences → Account (depending on your Office version)
You should see:
Product Activated
or
Microsoft Office Home & Business 2021
Troubleshooting
Office says activation is required
Make sure you're signed into the same Microsoft account used when redeeming the product key.
Restart Word and sign in again.
Check that your Mac has an active internet connection.
Your product key has already been redeemed
This usually means the license has already been linked to a Microsoft account.
Sign in using the Microsoft account originally used to redeem the key.
Installer won't open
Verify you're using a supported version of macOS.
Restart your Mac.
Download the installer again from your Microsoft account.
Installation failed
Remove any previous Office installations.
Restart your Mac.
Download a fresh installer and try again.
If you're running an older version of macOS, you may need an earlier Office installer.
