💡 Important
This guide is only for PCs currently running Windows 10 Home.
The Microsoft generic upgrade key does not activate Windows. It only changes the Windows edition from Home to Pro.
You will need a valid Windows 10 Pro product key to activate Windows after the upgrade process.
Before You Begin
Before starting, make sure you have:
✅ A PC running Windows 10 Home
✅ Your Windows 10 Pro product key
✅ Administrator access to your PC
Method 1 – Upgrade Windows 10 Home to Pro via Activation Settings
Open Settings by pressing Windows key + I.
Go to Update & Security → Activation.
Next to Change product key, click Change product key.
Enter the Windows 10 Pro product key that you purchased from us and click Next.
Click Start to begin the upgrade.
Restart your computer if prompted.
Once completed, return to Settings → Update & Security → Activation and confirm that Windows 10 Pro is activated.
Note: If the activation does not go through using this method, proceed to Method 2.
Method 2 – Upgrade Through the Microsoft Default Upgrade Key
Important: For this method to work, disconnect your computer from the internet before performing the steps.
Step 1 – Confirm Your Current Windows Edition
Open Settings.
Go to Update & Security → Activation.
Confirm that your current edition is Windows 10 Home.
Step 2 – Upgrade Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro
On the Activation page, click Change product key.
Enter the following Microsoft generic upgrade key:
VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T
💡 Important: This is Microsoft’s official generic upgrade key. It changes Windows from Home to Pro but does not activate Windows. Disconnecting from the internet prevents Windows from attempting online activation before the edition upgrade is completed.
Click Next.
Click Start or Activate when prompted.
Windows will begin upgrading to Windows 10 Pro.
Allow your PC to restart automatically.
💡Do not turn off your computer during the upgrade process.
Note: Windows may display the following message:
“Unable to upgrade your edition. We can’t upgrade your edition of Windows. Try upgrading your edition of Windows again.”
Don’t worry—this can be normal, and the upgrade may still work. Click Close, then restart your device to proceed.
Step 3 – Activate Windows 10 Pro
It is important to restart your computer to see the changes. After your PC restarts, reconnect to the internet before activating Windows with your Windows 10 Pro product key.
Open Settings → Update & Security → Activation.
Confirm that the edition now shows Windows 10 Pro.
Click Change product key.
Enter the Windows 10 Pro product key you purchased from us.
Click Next.
Click Activate.
Once activation is successful, the Activation page should display:
Edition: Windows 10 Pro
Activation: Windows is activated
If the Microsoft Upgrade Key Doesn’t Work
If Windows does not accept the Microsoft generic upgrade key:
Disconnect your PC from the internet.
Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the Ethernet cable.
Restart your computer.
Repeat Step 2 using the Microsoft generic upgrade key.
Once Windows has upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, reconnect to the internet.
Enter your purchased Windows 10 Pro product key to activate Windows.
