Completely Uninstall Microsoft Office Using Microsoft's Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA)

Overview

If you're experiencing problems installing, activating, or using Microsoft Office, a complete uninstall can often resolve the issue.

Microsoft's Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) is Microsoft's official tool for removing all Office components, including files and registry entries that may remain after a standard uninstall.

Use this guide to completely remove Microsoft Office before reinstalling it.

💡 Before You Begin

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • ✅ Administrator access to your PC

  • ✅ An internet connection

  • ✅ Your Office product key or Microsoft account information (if you'll be reinstalling Office afterward)

  • ✅ All Office applications are closed

Step 1 – Download the Microsoft SaRA Tool

  1. Open your web browser.

  2. Go to Microsoft's official Support and Recovery Assistant download page:

  3. Download the tool.

Step 2 – Run the Tool

  1. Open the downloaded file.

  2. If prompted by User Account Control (UAC), select Yes.

  3. Wait for the tool to launch.

Step 3 – Select Office

  1. Choose the version of Microsoft Office you want to remove.

  2. Select Next.

If you're unsure which version is installed, choose the option that matches your installed Office version as closely as possible.

Step 4 – Remove Office

  1. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  2. The tool will uninstall Office and remove remaining installation files.

  3. This process may take several minutes.

Do not interrupt the uninstall process.

Step 5 – Restart Your Computer

Once the uninstall is complete:

  1. Restart your computer when prompted.

  2. This ensures all Office components are fully removed.

Step 6 – Reinstall Microsoft Office

After restarting:

  1. Install Microsoft Office again using your installation file or Microsoft account.

  2. Activate Office using your product key or by signing in with the Microsoft account associated with your license.

✅ Troubleshooting

The SaRA tool won't open

  • Run the tool as an administrator.

  • Temporarily disable your antivirus software if it's blocking the application.

  • Download a fresh copy of the tool from Microsoft's website.

Office still appears after uninstalling

Restart your PC and check again.

If Office is still installed:

  • Run the SaRA tool one more time.

  • Ensure all Office applications are closed before running the uninstall.

I can't reinstall Office

If installation still fails after using SaRA:

  • Restart your PC again.

  • Download a fresh installer.

  • Make sure no other versions of Office or Microsoft 365 are installed.
