Overview
If you've already uninstalled Microsoft Office but are still experiencing problems when reinstalling it, there may be leftover files remaining on your computer.
Old Office files, licenses, or registry entries can interfere with a new installation and cause issues such as:
Office installation fails or gets stuck.
Office installs the wrong version.
Activation problems after installation.
Office applications crash or won't open.
Error messages during installation or activation.
Following the steps below will help remove any remaining Office files before reinstalling.
💡 Before You Begin
Before starting, make sure you have:
✅ Administrator access to your PC
✅ An internet connection
✅ Your Office product key (if required)
✅ All Office applications are closed
Step 1 – Uninstall Microsoft Office
If Office is still installed:
Open Settings.
Select Apps → Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps & features (Windows 10).
Locate your Microsoft Office installation.
Select Uninstall.
Restart your computer after the uninstall finishes.
If Office has already been removed, continue to the next step.
Step 2 – Use Microsoft's Office Uninstall Tool (Recommended)
Microsoft provides an official tool that removes Office and cleans up files that the normal uninstall may leave behind.
Visit Microsoft's official support article:
Download and run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) or the Office uninstall tool provided on the page.
Follow the on-screen instructions.
Restart your computer when prompted.
Recommended: This is the safest and most effective way to remove leftover Office files.
Step 3 – Delete Remaining Office Folders
After restarting:
Open File Explorer and remove the following folders if they still exist.
Windows 64-bit
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared
User folders
Press Windows + R, then open:
%ProgramData%
Delete:
Microsoft\Office
Next open:
%LocalAppData%
Delete:
Microsoft\Office
Finally open:
%AppData%
Delete:
Microsoft\Office
Skip any folders that do not exist.
Step 4 – Restart Your Computer
Restart Windows to ensure all Office components have been removed.
Step 5 – Reinstall Microsoft Office
Download and install Office again using your original installation guide or download link.
Once the installation is complete:
Open an Office application.
Enter your product key if prompted.
Activate Office.
Additional Troubleshooting
If Office still won't install after removing the leftover files:
Temporarily disable your antivirus software.
Make sure Windows is fully updated.
