Office Isn't Activated (Unlicensed Product)

If Microsoft Office displays "Unlicensed Product", "Product Activation Failed", or asks you to activate Office even after installation, it usually means that Office hasn't been activated successfully or there is a licensing conflict on your PC.

This guide will help you identify the cause and activate your copy of Microsoft Office.

💡 Before You Begin

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • ✅ Your Microsoft Office product key

  • ✅ An internet connection

  • ✅ Administrator access to your Windows PC

  • ✅ All Microsoft Office applications closed (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

Common Causes

This issue is commonly caused by one of the following:

  • The Office product key hasn't been activated.

  • An incorrect Office edition is installed.

  • A previous Microsoft 365 or Office license is conflicting with your new installation.

  • You're signed into a different Microsoft account than the one used to redeem your Office license.

  • Office activation hasn't completed successfully.

Step 1 – Verify Which Version of Office Is Installed

Your installed Office edition must match the product key you purchased.

  1. Open any Office application (such as Word).

  2. Select FileAccount.

  3. Under Product Information, check the Office edition that is installed.

If the installed version doesn't match your product key, uninstall the incorrect version and install the correct edition.

Step 2 – Activate Office Using Your Product Key

If you purchased a product key but haven't activated Office yet:

  1. Open your Office application.

  2. Select Activate Office if prompted.

  3. Enter your 25-character product key.

  4. Complete the activation process.

If your Office product is redeemed through a Microsoft account (such as Office Home & Business or Office Home & Student), sign in using the same Microsoft account used during redemption.

Step 3 – Check for Multiple Office Licenses

Older Office installations can prevent the correct license from being detected.

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Go to AppsInstalled apps.

  3. Look for other versions of:

    • Microsoft 365

    • Office 365

    • Microsoft Office

  4. Remove any versions that you no longer use.

  5. Restart your PC.

Step 4 – Sign Out and Sign Back In

If your Office license is linked to a Microsoft account:

  1. Open any Office application.

  2. Select FileAccount.

  3. Select Sign out.

  4. Close all Office applications.

  5. Reopen an Office application.

  6. Sign back in using the Microsoft account associated with your Office license.

Step 5 – Update Office

Installing the latest Office updates can resolve activation issues.

  1. Open any Office application.

  2. Select FileAccount.

  3. Select Update OptionsUpdate Now.

  4. Allow Office to install any available updates.

Step 6 – Restart Your Computer

After completing the previous steps:

  1. Restart your PC.

  2. Open an Office application.

  3. Check whether the Unlicensed Product message has disappeared.

Still Seeing "Unlicensed Product"?

If Office still isn't activated, the issue may be related to:

  • A Microsoft account licensing issue.

  • A license conflict from a previous Office installation.

Please contact our support team and include:

  • Your order number
