Office Keeps Asking You to Activate

If Microsoft Office repeatedly asks you to activate, even after you've already entered your product key, it's usually caused by an activation issue, a Microsoft account mismatch, or leftover licensing information from a previous Office installation.

Follow the steps below to resolve the issue.

💡 Before You Begin

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • ✅ Your Microsoft Office product key

  • ✅ An internet connection

  • ✅ Administrator access to your PC

  • ✅ All Office applications closed

Step 1 – Check Your Office Activation Status

Open any Office application (such as Word or Excel).

Select FileAccount.

Check the Product Information section.

If you see Activation Required, Unlicensed Product, or Product Activation Failed, continue with the steps below.

Step 2 – Confirm You're Signed In with the Correct Microsoft Account

If you're using a Microsoft account-based Office license (such as Office Home & Business 2024 for PC & Mac), make sure you're signed in with the Microsoft account that redeemed your product key.

Open an Office application.

Go to FileAccount.

Select Sign In (or Switch Account if you're signed into a different account).

Sign in using the Microsoft account associated with your Office license.

If you're unsure which account you used, sign in to your Microsoft account and check whether your Office license appears under Services & subscriptions.

Step 3 – Make Sure Your Office Version Matches Your License

Activation may continue to fail if the installed Office edition doesn't match your product key.

For example:

  • Office Home & Business 2024 key installed on Office Professional Plus

  • Office 2021 key installed on Office 2024

  • Retail key used with a Volume License installation

If the installed version doesn't match your license, uninstall the current Office version and install the correct edition before activating again.

Step 4 – Remove Old Office Licenses

Previous Office licenses can sometimes prevent the correct license from activating.

If you've previously had another version of Office installed (such as Microsoft 365, Office 2019, or Office 2021), remove the old licenses before activating your new one.

If you're experiencing version or product key conflicts, see:

Office Shows the Wrong Version or Uses the Wrong Product Key

After removing the old licenses, restart your PC and try activating Office again.

Step 5 – Update Microsoft Office

An outdated Office installation can occasionally cause activation problems.

Open any Office application.

Go to FileAccount.

Select Update OptionsUpdate Now.

Wait for the updates to complete, then restart the Office application.

Step 6 – Run Office as Administrator

Close all Office applications.

Right-click an Office application (such as Word).

Select Run as administrator.

If prompted by User Account Control, select Yes.

Try activating Office again.

Step 7 – Restart Your Computer

After completing the steps above, restart your PC and open an Office application again.

In many cases, Office will automatically detect the activated license after restarting.
