Before you begin
Make sure you have:
A stable internet connection
Administrator access to your Mac
Enough available storage space
Your order email and the download links supplied with it
Save your work, close every Microsoft Office application, and keep your Mac connected to the internet throughout the process.
Step 1: Check for a previous Office installation
If Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 has never been installed on this Mac, continue to Step 2.
If another Office version is installed, remove the old apps first to reduce the chance of installation or licensing conflicts:
Open Finder.
Select Applications in the sidebar.
Move Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote to Trash.
Good to know: Removing Office applications or licenses does not delete your personal Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files.
Step 2: Download the correct Office installer
Choose one Office installer based on the macOS version installed on your Mac. To check your version, open the Apple menu and select About This Mac.
MacOS 12-13
Use this installer for macOS Monterey (12) or macOS Ventura (13).
MacOS 14 or later
Use this installer for macOS Sonoma (14), macOS Sequoia (15), macOS Tahoe (26), or a later compatible release.
Important: Download only the installer that matches your macOS version. You will also need the separate activation tool in Step 4.
Step 3: Install Microsoft Office
Open Finder and select Downloads.
Double-click the downloaded Microsoft Office installer (.pkg).
Select Continue and review the Microsoft software license agreement.
Select Continue, then select Agree.
Choose the installation location if prompted.
Select Install.
Enter your Mac administrator password or use Touch ID when prompted.
Choose your preferred language if the installer asks for it.
Wait for the installation to finish, then select Close.
Next: Do not open an Office app yet. Complete the activation step first. If an Office app is already open, close it before continuing.
Step 4: Activate Office LTSC Standard 2024
Office LTSC Standard for Mac 2024 is activated with the Microsoft Office LTSC 2024 Volume License Serializer supplied with your order.
Expected package name: Microsoft_Office_LTSC_2024_VL_Serializer.pkg
Open Finder and select Downloads.
Double-click Microsoft_Office_LTSC_2024_VL_Serializer.pkg.
Select Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.
Select Install.
Enter your Mac administrator password or use Touch ID when prompted.
Wait for the activation package to finish, then select Close.
Restart your Mac.
No product key is required: The Volume License Serializer installs the Office LTSC 2024 license on your Mac. You do not need to enter a 25-character product key or sign in with a Microsoft account to activate Office.
Step 5: Open and verify Office
Open Finder and select Applications.
Open Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook.
Accept any first-launch prompts.
Create a blank document to confirm the app works normally.
In Word, select Word > About Microsoft Word from the menu bar.
Confirm that the installed version is 16.89 or later and that no Activation Required or Unlicensed Product warning appears.
Signing in with a Microsoft account is optional. It may be required for some connected services, but it is not required to activate the Office LTSC license.
Troubleshooting
Office still requests activation
Close all Office applications.
Run Microsoft_Office_LTSC_2024_VL_Serializer.pkg again.
Restart your Mac, then open Microsoft Word and check the activation status again.
Activation still fails
Use the recovery package below, then reapply the license:
Install the recovery package.
Restart your Mac.
Run the Office LTSC 2024 activation tool again.
Restart your Mac and reopen Word.
Office shows an old or incorrect license
A previous Microsoft 365 or Office license may still be stored on your Mac. Use Microsoft's official license removal tool, then run the Office LTSC 2024 activation tool again.
Warning: The Microsoft tool removes all Office licenses from the Mac. Before using it, make sure you have the information needed to reactivate any other Office product you plan to keep using.
The installer will not open
Make sure the installer was downloaded from the link included with your order. If macOS blocks the verified installer:
Open System Settings.
Select Privacy & Security.
Scroll to the message about the blocked installer.
Select Open Anyway.
Enter your Mac administrator password if prompted, then try the installer again.
Security: Select Open Anyway only when the installer came from the download link supplied with your order or directly from Microsoft.
Installation fails
Restart your Mac and run the installer again.
Confirm that enough storage space is available.
Install the latest macOS updates compatible with your Mac.
Close all Office applications before reinstalling.
Download the installer again in case the original file is incomplete.
Remove previous Office licenses if they are causing a conflict.
The latest Office build is not compatible with your macOS version
Microsoft may stop supporting older macOS releases in newer Office builds. Previous Office for Mac installers are available in Microsoft's update history.
Compatibility requirement: Office LTSC for Mac 2024 uses version 16.89 or later. An Office installer older than version 16.89 cannot be used with the Office LTSC 2024 volume license.
