Overview
If you receive Windows activation error 0x80070005, it usually means that Windows does not have the required permissions to complete the activation process.
This error can occur if:
Your user account doesn't have administrator privileges.
Windows Activation services don't have the correct permissions.
Security software is blocking the activation process.
System files or Windows licensing files are corrupted.
A Group Policy or organization-managed device is preventing activation.
💡 Before You Begin
Before starting, make sure you have:
✅ Your Windows product key
✅ An active internet connection
✅ Administrator access to your PC
Step 1 – Confirm You're Using an Administrator Account
Windows activation requires administrator permissions.
Open Settings.
Go to Accounts → Your info.
Confirm your account is listed as Administrator.
If it isn't, sign in with an administrator account before continuing.
Step 2 – Enter Your Product Key Again
Open Settings → System → Activation.
Select Change product key.
Enter your 25-character Windows product key.
Select Next, then Activate.
Step 3 – Run the Windows Activation Troubleshooter
Open Settings → System → Activation.
Select Troubleshoot.
Follow the on-screen instructions.
Restart your computer if prompted.
Note: The Activation Troubleshooter is only available if Windows is not already activated.
Step 4 – Restart the Software Protection Service
Press Windows + R, type:
services.msc
Press Enter.
Locate Software Protection.
If the service is stopped:
Right-click it.
Select Start.
If it's already running:
Right-click it.
Select Restart.
Try activating Windows again.
Step 5 – Repair Windows System Files
Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
Run the following command:
sfc /scannow
Wait for the scan to complete.
If SFC reports errors, run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Restart your PC.
Try activating Windows again.
Step 6 – Temporarily Disable Third-Party Antivirus
Some antivirus or endpoint security software can block Windows activation.
Temporarily disable your third-party antivirus.
Try activating Windows again.
Re-enable your antivirus after testing.
Important: Only disable antivirus temporarily while connected to a trusted network.
Step 7 – Check if the Device Is Managed by an Organization
If your PC is connected to a workplace or school account:
Open Settings → Accounts → Access work or school.
If the device is managed by an organization, activation policies may be controlled by your IT administrator.
If this is a company-owned device, contact your IT department before making changes.
