Overview
If you receive Windows activation error 0x80004005, it usually means that Windows encountered an unspecified error while trying to activate your license.
This error does not point to a single cause. It is commonly related to:
A temporary issue with Microsoft's activation servers.
Corrupted Windows activation files.
Damaged system files.
Network or firewall issues preventing activation.
An incorrect or incompatible Windows product key.
Problems after a major Windows update or hardware change.
💡 Before You Begin
Before starting, make sure you have:
✅ Your Windows product key
✅ A stable internet connection
✅ Administrator access to your PC
Step 1 – Verify Your Windows Edition
Your product key must match the Windows edition installed.
Open Settings.
Go to System → Activation.
Verify your installed edition (for example, Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro).
If the installed edition doesn't match your product key, install or upgrade to the correct Windows edition before activating.
Step 2 – Try Activating Again
Temporary Microsoft activation server issues can sometimes cause this error.
Open Settings → System → Activation.
Select Activate or Change product key.
Enter your 25-character Windows product key.
Select Next, then Activate.
If activation still fails, continue to the next step.
Step 3 – Run the Activation Troubleshooter
Open Settings → System → Activation.
Select Troubleshoot.
Follow the on-screen instructions.
The troubleshooter can automatically detect and repair common activation issues.
Step 4 – Check Your Internet Connection
Activation requires access to Microsoft's activation servers.
Make sure you're connected to the internet.
Disable any VPN connection temporarily.
If you're using a firewall or security software, temporarily disable it and try activating again.
After activation, remember to re-enable your security software.
Step 5 – Repair Windows System Files
Corrupted system files can prevent Windows from activating.
Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
Run the following command:
sfc /scannow
Wait for the scan to complete.
If issues are found and repaired, restart your PC and try activating Windows again.
Step 6 – Repair the Windows Component Store
If the problem persists:
Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Allow the repair to finish.
Restart your computer and try activating Windows again.
Step 7 – Re-enter Your Product Key
Sometimes Windows needs the product key to be registered again.
Open Settings → System → Activation.
Select Change product key.
Enter your Windows product key.
Select Next, then Activate.
