If you see a message stating that your product key is for a different version of Microsoft Office, it usually means that the product key you're trying to activate doesn't match the version of Office currently installed on your PC.
For example:
You're installing Office Professional Plus 2024, but the product key is for Office Home & Business 2024.
You're installing Office 2021, but the product key is for Office 2024.
A previous version of Office is still installed and is preventing the correct version from activating.
The steps below will help you identify the installed version and install the correct edition.
💡 Before You Begin
Before starting, make sure you have:
✅ Your Microsoft Office product key
✅ Administrator access to your Windows PC
✅ An internet connection
Step 1 – Check Which Version of Office Is Installed
Open any Office application (such as Word or Excel).
Select File → Account.
Under Product Information, note the installed Office edition and version.
Alternatively:
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
Look for Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365.
Confirm which edition is installed.
If the installed Office edition does not match your product key, continue to the next step.
Step 2 – Verify Your Product Key
Confirm that your product key matches the Office edition you purchased.

Office Home & Business 2024 | Office Home & Business 2024 |
Office Professional Plus 2024 | Office Professional Plus 2024 |

A product key cannot activate a different Office edition or release year.
Step 3 – Remove the Incorrect Office Version
If the wrong Office edition is installed:
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
Select the Microsoft Office installation.
Choose Uninstall.
Restart your PC after the uninstall is complete.
Step 4 – Install the Correct Office Version
Install the Office edition that matches your product key.
If you purchased your product key from EM Digital Group, use the installation guide provided with your order to download and install the correct version of Office.
After installation:
Open an Office application.
Enter your product key when prompted.
Complete the activation process.
Step 5 – Still Receiving the Same Error?
If you've confirmed that:
the correct Office edition is installed,
you're using the correct product key, and
the error still appears,
the product key may need to be verified.
