Windows Error Code: 0xC004C008

Error code: 0xC004C008

Overview

If you receive the following message when activating Windows:

We can't activate Windows on this device because the product key was already used on another device.

Error code: 0xC004C008

it usually means that the product key has already been activated on another device or Microsoft's activation servers believe the key is still associated with a previous installation.

In many cases, this happens after replacing hardware, reinstalling Windows, or transferring a Retail license to a new PC.

💡 Before You Begin

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • ✅ Your Windows product key

  • ✅ An internet connection

  • ✅ Administrator access to your PC

Step 1 – Confirm Your Windows Edition

Your product key must match the Windows edition installed.

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Go to SystemActivation.

  3. Verify your installed edition (for example, Windows 11 Pro or Windows 11 Home).

If the installed edition doesn't match your product key, install or upgrade to the correct edition before activating.

Step 2 – Run the Activation Troubleshooter

  1. Open SettingsSystemActivation.

  2. Select Troubleshoot.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

If your Retail license is linked to your Microsoft account, Windows may automatically reactivate after verifying your device.

Step 3 – Verify the Product Key

Re-enter your product key:

  1. Open SettingsSystemActivation.

  2. Select Change product key.

  3. Enter your Windows product key.

  4. Select Next and complete activation.

Double-check that the key has been entered correctly.

Step 4 – If You Recently Changed Hardware

If you replaced major hardware (such as the motherboard), Windows may consider your PC to be a new device.

If your Retail license is linked to your Microsoft account:

  1. Open SettingsSystemActivation.

  2. Click Troubleshoot.

  3. Select I changed hardware on this device recently.

  4. Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your Windows license.

  5. Select your device and reactivate Windows.

Step 5 – Contact Your Software Seller

If you purchased your Windows license from a reseller and this is the first time you've used the key, contact the seller.

They can verify the product key and, if necessary, provide a replacement if the key has already reached its activation limit or cannot be activated.
