💡 What this error means
The product key you entered is either:
For a different Windows edition (for example, Windows 11 Pro key on Windows 11 Home)
Typed incorrectly
Not valid for the version of Windows installed
Intended for a different licensing type (Retail, Volume, OEM, etc.)
Before You Begin
Make sure you have:
✅ Your Windows product key
✅ Administrator access to your PC
✅ An internet connection
Step 1 – Confirm Your Installed Windows Edition
Before activating Windows, verify which edition is currently installed.
Open Settings.
Go to System → Activation.
Look for Edition.
Examples:
Windows 11 Home
Windows 11 Pro
Windows 11 Enterprise
Important
Your product key must match the installed Windows edition.
Step 2 – Make Sure You're Using the Correct Product Key
Below are some common examples:
Installed Windows | Correct Product Key |
Windows 11 Home | Windows 11 Home key |
Windows 11 Pro | Windows 11 Pro key |
Windows 11 Enterprise | Windows 11 Enterprise key |
A Windows Home key cannot activate Windows Pro.
A Windows Pro key cannot activate Windows Home.
An Enterprise key cannot activate Home or Pro.
Step 3 – If You Have Windows Home but Purchased Windows Pro
If your computer is running Windows Home and you purchased a Windows Pro product key, you must first upgrade Windows from Home to Pro.
Follow this guide:
After the upgrade is complete, activate Windows using your purchased Windows Pro product key.
Step 4 – Enter the Product Key Again
Open Settings.
Go to System → Activation.
Select Change product key.
Carefully enter your 25-character product key.
Example:
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Then select Next and follow the prompts.
💡 Tip
Product keys do not contain the letters A, E, I, O, U, L, S, or Z. Double-check similar-looking characters such as 0 (zero) and 8 (eight).
Step 5 – Restart Your Computer
If Windows still shows the error:
Restart your computer.
Try entering the product key again.
A restart can sometimes refresh the activation service.

Installing the latest updates can resolve activation issues.
Open Settings.
Go to Windows Update.
Select Check for updates.
Install any available updates.
Restart your PC.
Then try activating Windows again.
