Activating Windows verifies that your copy of Windows is genuine and unlocks all features included with your license.
This guide explains how to activate Windows using your product key.
💡 Before you begin
Make sure you have a stable internet connection.
Ensure you purchased the correct product key for your Windows edition (Home, Pro, Enterprise, etc.).
Verify that the Windows edition installed on your PC matches your product key.
Option 1 – Activate Through Windows Settings (Recommended)
Press Windows + I to open Settings.
Go to System → Activation.
Click Change product key.
Enter your 25-character Windows product key.
Click Next, then Activate.
If the product key is valid and matches your installed Windows edition, Windows will activate automatically.
Option 2 – Activate Using Command Prompt
If activation through Settings does not work, you can activate using Command Prompt.
Step 1
Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
Click Start
Type cmd
Right-click Command Prompt
Select Run as administrator
Step 2
Install your product key by running:
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Replace the Xs with your Windows product key.
You should receive a message confirming the key was installed successfully.
Step 3
Activate Windows:
slmgr /ato
After a few moments, Windows should display a message confirming successful activation.
Verify Activation Status
To confirm Windows is activated:
Open Settings
Go to System → Activation
You should see one of the following:
✅ Windows is activated
✅ Windows is activated with a digital license
You can also check using Command Prompt:
slmgr /xpr
A window will appear showing whether Windows is permanently activated.
If Activation Fails
If Windows cannot be activated, check the following:
Verify your Windows edition
Your installed Windows edition must match your product key.
Examples:
Windows 11 Home key → Windows 11 Home
Windows 11 Pro key → Windows 11 Pro
Windows 10 Home key → Windows 10 Home
Windows 10 Pro key → Windows 10 Pro
Check your internet connection
Windows activation requires an internet connection.
Double-check the product key
Ensure:
All 25 characters are entered correctly.
No extra spaces are included.
Similar characters such as B and 8, or G and 6, are not confused.
Restart your computer
Sometimes restarting Windows and trying again resolves temporary activation issues.
Use the Activation Troubleshooter
Open Settings
Go to System → Activation
Select Troubleshoot
Follow the on-screen instructions.
