What Is Windows in S Mode?
Windows in S mode is designed for security and performance. While S mode is enabled, your computer can only install applications available through the Microsoft Store.
If you need to install software downloaded from another website, such as Microsoft Office or another desktop application, you must switch out of S mode first.
Important: Switching out of S mode is free, but permanent. After switching, you cannot return to S mode without reinstalling Windows.
Before You Begin
Make sure that:
Your computer is connected to the internet.
Windows is fully updated.
You can access the Microsoft Store.
You are signed in with a Microsoft account if prompted.
Switching out of S mode does not delete your personal files or installed applications.
Windows 11 Instructions
Press Windows + I to open Settings.
Select System.
Select Activation.
Find the Switch to Windows 11 Home section.
Select Go to the Store.
Do not select the option under Upgrade your edition of Windows. This is a different process and may require payment.
The Microsoft Store will open on the Switch out of S mode page.
Select Get.
Wait for the confirmation message.
You can now download and install applications from outside the Microsoft Store.
Windows 10 Instructions
Press Windows + I to open Settings.
Select Update & Security.
Select Activation.
Find the Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro section.
Select Go to the Store.
Do not select the option under Upgrade your edition of Windows. This is a different process and may require payment.
On the Switch out of S mode page in the Microsoft Store, select Get.
Wait for the confirmation message.
You can now install applications from outside the Microsoft Store.
Windows 10 notice: Microsoft ended standard support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. If your computer is compatible, we recommend upgrading to Windows 11.
If the “Get” Button Does Not Work
Try the following:
Restart your computer.
Confirm that you have a stable internet connection.
Install any available Windows updates.
Open the Microsoft Store and sign in with your Microsoft account.
In the Microsoft Store, go to Library and select Get updates.
Return to the Switch out of S mode page and try again.
You can also reset the Microsoft Store cache:
Press Windows + R.
Enter:
wsreset.exe
Select OK.
Wait for the Microsoft Store to reopen, then try switching again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does switching out of S mode cost anything?
No. Microsoft does not charge a fee to switch out of S mode.
Will switching delete my files?
No. Switching out of S mode does not remove your personal files, applications, or Windows license.
Can I switch back to S mode later?
No. Switching out of S mode is a one-way process. You cannot enable S mode again without reinstalling Windows.
Is switching out of S mode the same as upgrading Windows?
No. Switching out of S mode removes the Microsoft Store-only application restriction. It does not upgrade Windows Home to Windows Pro or change your Windows edition.
