A factory reset reinstalls Windows and removes installed applications and settings. You can choose whether to keep your personal files or remove everything.
Before You Begin
Back up important files.
Connect your computer to a power source.
Make sure you know your Microsoft account password.
Keep your BitLocker recovery key available if device encryption is enabled.
Windows 11
Open Settings.
Select System.
Select Recovery.
Next to Reset this PC, select Reset PC.
Choose one of the following:
Keep my files – Keeps personal files but removes apps and settings.
Remove everything – Removes personal files, apps, and settings.
Choose how Windows should be reinstalled:
Cloud download – Downloads a fresh copy of Windows.
Local reinstall – Uses the Windows files already on your computer.
Review your choices and select Reset.
Windows 10
Open Settings.
Select Update & Security.
Select Recovery.
Under Reset this PC, select Get started.
Choose Keep my files or Remove everything.
Follow the instructions on the screen and select Reset.
If Windows Does Not Start
Turn on the computer.
When Windows begins loading, hold the power button to turn it off.
Repeat this process two or three times until the Windows Recovery Environment appears.
Select Troubleshoot.
Select Reset this PC.
Choose Keep my files or Remove everything and follow the instructions.
Important
The reset may take some time, and your computer may restart several times. Do not turn off or unplug the computer during the process.
If you are selling or giving away the computer, choose Remove everything and enable the option to clean the drive when available.
