Overview
If you're seeing the following activation error:
It looks like the hardware on this device has changed. Make sure you are connected to the internet and try again later. (0xC0EA000A)
Windows is unable to verify your activation after detecting a significant hardware change, such as replacing your motherboard, CPU, SSD, or other major components.
In many cases, this error can also occur due to a temporary communication issue with Microsoft's activation servers.
Following the steps below will usually resolve the issue and allow Windows to activate successfully.
💡 Before You Begin
Before starting, make sure you have:
✅ Your Windows product key
✅ Administrator access to your PC
✅ A stable internet connection
Step 1 – Confirm You're Connected to the Internet
Windows must be able to communicate with Microsoft's activation servers.
Open your web browser.
Visit any website to confirm your internet connection is working.
If you're using Wi-Fi, try reconnecting or restarting your router if necessary.
Once you're connected, continue to the next step.
Step 2 – Restart Your PC
Temporary activation issues are often resolved after a restart.
Click Start.
Select Power → Restart.
After Windows loads again, wait a few minutes before checking activation.
Step 3 – Check Your Windows Edition
Your product key must match the edition of Windows installed on your PC.
Open Settings.
Go to System → Activation.
Confirm your installed edition (for example, Windows 11 Pro or Windows 11 Home).
If your installed edition doesn't match your purchased product key, Windows cannot activate.
Example: A Windows 11 Pro product key cannot activate Windows 11 Home.
If the editions don't match, install or upgrade to the correct Windows edition before activating.
Step 4 – Enter Your Product Key Again
If the edition is correct:
Open Settings.
Go to System → Activation.
Select Change product key.
Enter your Windows product key.
Click Next, then Activate.
Allow Windows a few moments to contact Microsoft's activation servers.
Step 5 – Wait and Try Again Later
Error 0xC0EA000A is sometimes caused by a temporary issue with Microsoft's activation service.
If activation still fails:
Wait 30–60 minutes.
Restart your computer.
Try activating again.
Step 6 – Run the Windows Activation Troubleshooter
If Windows was previously activated on this device with a digital license:
Open Settings.
Go to System → Activation.
Select Troubleshoot.
Follow the on-screen instructions.
If your digital license is linked to your Microsoft account, you may also see the option:
I changed hardware on this device recently
Select it and follow the prompts to restore your activation.
